Mise-en-scene blog tasks

 


1) Find a distinctive still image and write an analysis of the mise-en-scene. Use each of the aspects you've learned in the lesson.




Costume

-Military styled clothing.Symbolism of protection

-Green top covered in blood, signifies danger

-Blood->reinforces this film as a action/thriller genre


Lighting

-High key lighting 

-Juxtaposes the genre as it is set in a slightly sunny location

-Main light focuses on persons face, shifts the audiences focus on the characters facial expressions

-Natural lighting creates sense of realism

Actors

-Frame focuses only on one actor

-Their body seems to be levitating upwards, freeze frame shot whilst actor was attacked

-Blood on shirt indicates actor being attacked(shot)

-Facial expressions-shows signs of misery, despair, pain

-Character looking into distance, searching for something.

Makeup

-Face appears slightly dusty(could be from the smoke from the image)


Setting

-Mountains faded in the background(blocked by the smoke)

-Naturalistic and adventurous atmosphere

-Outdoor setting->blue sky makes the scene feel isolated and spacious








2) Find TWO film or TV extracts on YouTube from different genres (e.g. horror, sci-fi, costume drama). Embed them in your blogpost and write a comparison of the mise-en-scene in each.

The mise-en-scene in the horror A Quiet place and the sci-fi extract, Blade runner 2049 creates two very different atmospheres and communicates the conventions of each genre. By focusing on the trailer of 'A quiet place', the dark and muted creates a tense and threatening atmosphere whilst also making an isolated setting which occurs to make the characters seem vulnerable. The characters are presented to be wearing casual clothing creating a sense of realism also making the situation seem relatable. The props and environment show great importance as everyday objects become connected to the characters attempt to survive. 'Blade Runner 2049' uses a futuristic setting and uses advanced technology creating a world that is different to everyday life. This trailers use of lighting and strong colours creates an unusual appearance for the setting. In comparison ,both extracts use lighting, setting and costume to establish their genres but 'A quiet place' focuses on realism and isolation but 'Blade runner 2049' focuses more on technology and the future.

The dark setting and unusual imagery establishes a world different from the audiences. This image uses low-key lighting which creates shadows and a threatening atmosphere.
